Insurance
While more insurance companies are reimbursing for acupuncture therapies every day, many still do not, or have exclusions that restrict reimbursement to physicians (M.D.’s) or for certain conditions (eg. pain only).
MEDCOST®, Wake Forest Baptist Health’s primary insurer, reimburses for acupuncture, including services by licensed acupuncturists (not just MDs). The “High” plan covers up to 90% of costs up to $1000 per calendar year of services (after deductible), while the “Low” plan covers up to 70% of costs up to $1000 per calendar year of services.
Other insurance carriers that cover acupuncture (depending upon your plan) include Aetna®,United Health Care®, and Blue Cross Blue Shield®, although BCBS of North Carolina® does not reimburse for acupuncture provided by a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.). We suggest you call your insurance company to ask about specific coverage of L.Ac. administered acupuncture. Health Savings or Flexible Medical Spending Accounts nearly always reimburse for acupuncture.
WE DO NOT FILE INSURANCE, however, if you have insurance coverage and so request, we will provide you with the appropriate billing reimbursement information (ICD-9 and CPT Coding) adequate for you to self-file for your own reimbursement.
